We describe the synthesis of cadmium bis-(diphenyldithiophosphinate) (Cd(S2PPh2)2) from secondary phosphine sulfides and its subsequent use as a precursor for cadmium sulfide nanocrystals. Heating Cd(S2PPh2)2 with cadmium tetradecanoate in octadecene (25 -> 240 �C) leads to cadmium sulfide nanocrystals with cadmium tetradecanoate surface termination. Monitoring of this reaction with 31P and 13C NMR and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy shows the production of cadmium diphenylphosphinate (Cd(O2PPh2)2) and tetradecanoic acid anhydride are coupled with the formation of cadmium sulfide. Nanocrystals with exceptionally narrow size distributions are evident from the linewidth of the lowest energy absorption feature (l = 410-423 nm, fwhm = 0.17 eV). Stoichiometry-dependent photoluminescence quantum yields up to 36% will be discussed in light of a balanced chemical equation.
