While C�H activation with gold(III) is well known, the ability of gold(I) to perform C�H activation is a more recent discovery.This process employs gold(I) chlorides to achieve the C�H activation of a number of electron-deficient arenes. Notably, the preference of gold(I) for electron-deficient arenes is in direct contrast to gold(III), which typically prefers electron-rich arenes. This mild transformation generates aryl gold(I) species in excellent yields. Synthesis of these gold(I) species and their application to subsequent transformations will be discussed.
