Pt(II) complexes have been found to catalyze the net addition of aromatic C-H bonds across carbon-carbon double bonds. The Pt catalyzed formation of alkyl arenes involves two key metal mediated processes: migratory insertion of an olefin into a Pt-aryl bond and subsequent aromatic C-H activation. Details of these processes have been studied, including substrate scope, impact of ancillary ligands, olefin insertion and C-H activation kinetics, isolation of catalytic intermediates, and isotopic labeling.
