We report detection of Listeria monocytogenes by immobilization of a monoclonal mouse antibody onto an Au electrode, and measurement of bacterial attachment by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).  L. monocytogenes are grown in brain-heart infusion broth, washed in sterile phosphate buffered saline (pH 7.2), and then serially diluted to extinction to determine the sensitivity.  The impedance response to L. monocytogenes at the antibody-coated Au electrode can be fit to a Randles equivalent circuit, with the charge transfer resistance (Rct) the most sensitive element to bacterial attachment.  Concentrations as low as 3 CFU/mL can be detected by impedance measurements; however, methods for discriminating between live and dead bacteria will better elucidate the sensitivity of the instrument.  Methods and materials needed to develop rapid, inexpensive and portable biosensors for food pathogens will be discussed.
