Water is a virtually limitless resourse for renewable hydrogen production using solar energy to drive the conversion. Limitations on H2 production from water are based on the high cost of materials to overcome high overpotentials in catalyzing O2 evolution and O-O bond formation. We are developing catalysts based on the atomic structure of the universally-conserved water-oxidizing comlpex (WOC) found in oxygenetic photosynthesis. Our goal has focused on the developing bioinspired water oxidation catalysis, including both organometallic M4O4-cubanes and extended metal (M) oxide solids possesing M4O4-cubical subclusters.
