A series of substituted isatin semicarbazones containing fluoro and trifluoro moiety were designed and synthesised to meet the structural requirements essential for anticonvulsant properties. The characterizations of all synthesised molecules were confirmed by UV, IR, NMR and elemental analyses. All compounds were evaluated for their anticonvulsant activity by maximal electroshock (MES), subcutaneous metrazol (ScMet) and their neurotoxic effects were determined by rotorod test. A number of semicarbazones exhibited significant protection after intraperitoneal administration at the dose of 100 and 300mg/kg. One of the semicarbazone derivative  having fluoro and chloro group in the structure, emerged as showing good activity in all the two tests and no neurotoxic acitivity. The results evidenced the importance of hydrogen bonding and suggested the structural requirement of the pharmacophore model for anticonvulsant activity and these studies will lead to choose a prototype for development of new anticonvulsants.
