Oxidation catalysis can be quite complex and obtaining precise kinetic measurements, especially non-steady-state kinetics, is essential to understanding the relationship between catalyst activity and the catalyst composition/structure.   This paper presents results on several key selective oxidation reactions using the temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor system.   Details of the TAP experiment are presented to highlight its relevance as a tool for elucidating mechanistic and kinetic aspects of adsorption, diffusion, and reaction on supported metal and mixed metal oxide catalysts.The determination of intrinsic catalyst properties as they depend on the surface oxygen composition and surface metal composition is discussed.  Example reactions include ethylene epoxidation, n-butane oxidation to maleic anhydride, and CO oxidation over Au/SiO2.  Results show how changes in catalyst surface composition alter the intrinsic kinetic parameters of a catalyst and how these changes can be tracked using 'state-defining and state-altering' TAP experiments.
