Due to dwindling energy resources and the increased need of high-performance autonomous devices, the demand is rapidly growing for efficient technologies to handle high power loads, best fulfilled by electrochemical energy storage (EES). Many of the existing energy storage devices are made of materials that are either unsafe to discard in landfills or produce undesirable combustion products, such as toxic gases or high ash contents. To mitigate this waste disposal problem, a fully operational �green� supercapacitor has been developed using a wide range of environmentally friendly component materials, which neither contain any hazardous substances nor produce any fluorine, sulphur, or cyanide-containing products when burned. As the device is predominantly carbon-based, its residue on ignition is minimal, facilitating incineration-based disposal. All components are mutually compatible with each other, and the assembled supercapacitors meet or exceed the charge storage density and rate handling abilities of comparable devices with fewer environmentally benign components.
