In order to continuously improve HDT catalysts (CoMo/Alumina), each preparation step must be carefully controlled since they influence the active phase precursors - support interactions, which are decisive for the final activity of the catalysts. This work has allowed to underline the key impact of the impregnation step on the catalytic performances by following the evolution of the molybdenum speciation from the solution to the dried catalysts, prepared either with the heteropolyanion (3Co2+; H4Co2Mo10O386�) or with the standard polymolybdates route. The results show that the use of heteropolyanion solutions, for which the anions contain both Co and Mo atoms and are in strong interaction with Co2+ counter-cations, allows a good dispersion of Mo and Co elements on alumina surface, keeping their close vicinity even if this compound is partly decomposed upon impregnation. It leads to very well dispersed and promoted MoS2 nanoparticles and results to highly improved catalytic performances.
