Kinetic modeling of VGO hydrotreatment requires a detailed characterization of VGO cuts as well as of their hydrotreated products, especially the distribution of main chemical families. Over the last years, analytical systems based on comprehensive two dimensional gas chromatography (GC�GC) have been developed for the characterization of petroleum distillates. These techniques offer wide possibilities for the characterization of VGO feeds and conversion products. HT-GC�GC recently enabled complete elution of conventional VGO cuts and resin fractions. Detailed characterization of sulfur and nitrogen-containing compounds was also obtained.  These developments open up exciting perspectives for a better understanding and modeling of the reactions involved in VGO hydrotreatment. Kinetic lumps based on the reactivity of sulfur and nitrogen species towards HDT can be defined from the detailed analyses described in this work. The identification of nitrogen compounds that are the most refractory towards HDT is particularly a great challenge.
