Formation and cleavage of C-C bonds are involved in many industrial processes. Examples of C-C bond formation include the alkene oligomerization, alkylation of alkenes, and carbonylation of various organic molecules, whereas examples of C-C bond cleavage include alkane cracking, decarbonylation of aldehydes, and decarboxylation of carboxylic acids. This talk will discuss the relationships of catalyst properties to the mechanism and kinetics of such reactions. Insights from both experimental and theoretical studies will be described.
