Iron (oxyhydr)oxides influence the environmental fate and transport of arsenic in natural waters and are used in engineered systems to remove arsenic from drinking water. Adsorption and desorption of arsenic to iron (oxyhydr)oxides are strongly dependent on the water chemistry. Iron (oxyhydr)oxides can also participate in the oxidation of As(III) to As(V) in the presence of oxygen and aqueous Fe(II), lowering arsenic's toxicity and increasing its adsorption. In this project, As(III) adsorption properties to lepidocrocite were examined under oxic and anoxic conditions with a range of chemical properties that include Fe(II) dose, pH, and the presence of competing adsorbates. Experiments were performed in batch reactors with lepidocrocite prepared with bench-scale electrocoagulation system. The oxidation states of arsenic in both solution and on the solid phase were determined over the course of the reactions.  In addition to adsorbing to lepidocrocite, As(III) was oxidized in systems that contained both Fe(II) and lepidocrocite.
