The compound [Fe(bbpc)(MeCN)2]2+ (bbpc = N,N'-bis(phenylmethyl)-N,N'-bis(2-pyridinylmethyl)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine) catalyzes the oxidation of allylic, benzylic, and tertiary aliphatic C-H bonds by air. When a substrate with weaker C-H bonds is oxidized, an intermediate accumulates. The rates of formation and decomposition of the intermediate scale with the concentration of substrate, suggesting that there are multiple oxidants. Mass spectrometry, optical and EPR spectroscopy, and the intermediate's sensitivity to acids and bases suggest that it is [Fe(bbpc)(MeCN)(OOH)]2+. On the basis of the kinetics, we speculate that this may be preceded by a ferric superoxo oxidant.
