Manganese is an essential element for human nutrition, but in excess can exhibit significant toxicity.  Recently, Mn2+ has been used as an MRI contrast agent in neurobiology and other studies. Optical probes for Mn2+ are of interest to complement MRI studies, along with other biological or environmental applications.  For Mn2+ fluorescent probes, the exhibition of �on� fluorescence is a challenge due to paramagnetic quenching. Based on a known BAPTA-based ligand showing �on� fluorescence, several new analogs with varying linker chemistry between binding site and fluorophore were prepared. The new compounds showed both�on�and �off� fluorescence response to Mn2+.  Synthesis and fluorescence data will be presented.
