Vanadium complexes that contain nitride ligands are fascinating species that display both unusual and useful reactivities. For instance, vanadium nitride complexes can act as: key intermediates in the activation and cleavage of dinitrogen; reagents for N-atom transfer reactions; and building blocks for vanadium-nitride-containing polymers. However, despite their importance, fully characterized examples of these complexes remain uncommon. Herein, we report a mixed valence V(III)V(IV) dinuclear complex featuring a linear symmetric V=N=V bridge, which was formed by the unexpected dissociation of the metathesis product of the reaction between [Cp*V(�2-N)Cl]2 and lithium N-N'-bis(cyclohexyl)methylamidinate. The structure and reactivity of this species will be described.
