The bis(mercaptoimidazolyl)methane ligand BmmMe has been used to prepare a variety of transition metal complexes, including copper(I) derivatives (BmmMe)CuX (X = Cl, Br, I).  These species cleanly reacted with bis(pyrazolyl)borate (BpRR') ligands to produce the heteroleptic complexes (BmmMe)Cu(BpRR'), which are excellent structural models for the copper-binding site in methanobactin, a small copper protein present in methane-oxidizing bacteria.  This work has now been extended to the related bis(thione) ligands BmeMe, BmpMe, and BmbMe having two, three, or four methylene units between the heterocyclic rings, respectively.  This presentation will describe the syntheses of their corresponding group 12 metal derivatives LMX2 (M = Zn, Cd, Hg; X = Cl, Br, I) and our initial attempts to isolate copper(I) derivatives as well.
