The family of [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] (Mn12) clusters has been a rich resource of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and has been extensively studied over the years. The neutral Mn12 molecules in solution display multiple reversible one-electron reductions in electrochemical studies. In previous work, the anionic [Mn12]n- (n = 1, 2 and 3) clusters with electron-withdrawing carboxylates have been successfully generated chemically, and the magnetic and other properties of the isolated salts have been characterized. The Mn12 clusters also display electrochemical oxidations and we have recently been exploring the possibility of obtaining and studying a cationic [Mn12]+ cluster. A direct synthetic procedure to such a complex has been developed involving comproportionation between MnII and MnO4- in the presence of electron-donating carboxylates. The synthesis, structure, and magnetism studies will be described.
