Manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (OMS) is highly porous material having a variety of different pore structures. These materials have been extensively studied and shown to have vast area of  applications  in environmental chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, and energy-related applications. Herein we report a facile process to synthesize cryptomelane-type octahedral molecular sieve (K-OMS-2) nanomaterials using a microwave accelerated hydrothermal technique. In this study, the reaction time and temperature were significantly reduced. This efficient, rapid, and low temperature processes promote the global future energy security initiatives. Essential factors for catalysis such as surface area and particle size were controlled by altering the synthesis temperature and time. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and N2 sorption study. Reaction time and temperature were reduced to 40�C and 10 seconds, respectively, where a conventional hydrothermal reaction would run at 240�C for 4 days. A time study as well as a temperature study was done. High surface area (142 � 1 m2/g) was obtained compared to conventional hydrothermal method (14� m2/g ). TEM images show typical fiber like morphology after 10 sec at 40 � C. Catalytic performance of the synthesized materials was tested in the cinnamyl alcohol oxidation. Excellent catalytic activity was observed with the catalyst synthesized using microwave (31%) compared to the catalyst synthesized by using conventional hydrothermal method (6%). In both cases, the selectivity was 100% towards the cinnamyl aldehyde.
