Finding a cheap, sustainable and efficient system for the conversion and storage of solar energy is a very challenging task. The design of �proper� ligand scaffolds that can support metal complexes represents a significant step in achieving desired catalysis such as water oxidation, H2 evolution or hydrocarbon oxidation. We will describe the design, synthesis, and characterization of new types of penta- and tetradentate ligands and their metal complexes such as Fe, Co and Ni. Their activities towards H2 evolution and water oxidation will be discussed.
