Late-stage functionalization of lanthanide complexes is a powerful strategy to rapidly access a large variety of structures. Such an approach could facilitate the discovery and optimization of new complexes for applications as diverse as molecular imaging and materials chemistry. We found that microwave irradiation accelerated the Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition for both alkyne and azide-functionalized lanthanide complex substrates, providing the products in high yield in 5-30 min. The method was applicable to the synthesis of pure heterobimetallic and heterotrimetallic architectures.
