We are studying aqueous, enantioselective, lanthanide-catalyzed, bond-forming reactions. In our research we use luminescence measurements to monitor ligand�metal titrations for several lanthanide-containing precatalysts. Europium was used for the study because its luminescence properties enabled monitoring of changes in coordination environment as a function of ligand-to-metal stoichiometry by following the 5D0?7F1 and 5D0?7F2 transitions. We will present our measurements of the stability of several lanthanide-based precatalysts in aqueous solvent systems. The results from this study are expected to impact the rational design of new ligands for aqueous, enantioselective, bond-forming reactions that are important for the synthesis of biologically active compounds.
