We are synthesizing polymer-containing LnIII-based complexes that have the potential of being used as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging. An important parameter that governs the efficiency of contrast agents is the exchange rate between coordinated and bulk water. We have designed a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-containing model system to investigate the influence of both the length and density of PEG on the water-exchange rate of LnIII-based complexes. Here, we present the synthesis and characterization of PEG-functionalized LnIII-containing complexes. These results are expected to provide insight into the influence of PEG on water-exchange rate and contrast agent efficiency.
