A trivalent cerium compound of the octamethyltetraazaannulene (omtaa2-, C26H30N42-) ligand has been synthesized in order to explore Ce(IV/III) redox chemistry. Oxidation of this Ce(III) compound occurs through a single crystal transformation on exposure to mild oxidizing conditions. Electrochemical analysis of CeIV(omtaa)2 shows reversible redox behavior and a strong preference for the Ce(IV) oxidation state. Reactivity studies have shown that oxidation of [CeIII(omtaa)2]- occurs by hydrogen atom transfer driven by the oxidation of the Ce(III) ion.
