Recently, two dimensional (2D) materials have attracted growing attention owing to their unique physical properties or the ready access demonstration of small molecules. In particular, 2D structured electrodes are highly practicable candidates for the fabrication of the high-rate capability lithium ion batteries (LIB) because of fast lithium ion diffusion. We report on the synthesis and applications of 2D TiO2 nanocrystals to visualize fast charging and discharging effect on 2D structured electrodes. 2D TiO2 nanosheets and nanoribbons were successfully synthesized using the colloidal chemistry and the surface of crystals was modified to be diffusible in polar electrolyte solutions. Ultrathin morphology of 2D TiO2 electrodes affected not only the diffusion path of Li ion but also the reaction mechanism from the insertion reaction of the crystal interior to the surface reaction. Furthermore, the electrodes of two dimensional TiO2 nanocrystals had the superior cycling and rate performances.
