Macroporous CeO2 and Ce1-xZrxO2 were synthesized via a hard templating pathway using colloidal polymer spheres; and the performance of these materials in a two-step thermochemical cycle that produces CO was analyzed. The effects of heating rate, pore morphology, and composition on the fuel production and reaction kinetics were evaluated. Hard templated CeO2 samples have substantially improved kinetics for fuel production and produce more fuel overall when compared to non-porous CeO2. Sintering and crystal grain growth cause dramatic changes in the feature sizes of the hard templated materials, since high temperatures (~1200 �C) are reached during the reduction step. A disordered, interconnected pore network is retained after repeated thermochemical cycling, which preserves the improved fuel production kinetics over dozens of cycles. Addition of zirconium cations to CeO2 improves the thermal stability of the resultant mixed oxide and alters reaction kinetics.
