Bimetallic catalysts for biomass conversion, solar fuels, and a host of other applications can be optimized by synthesizing supported nanoparticles with 1) small particle size and 2) close association of the two metals.  We will demonstrate how electrostatic adsorption can be used to produce ultrasmall (less than 2 nm) bimetallic particles with controlled morphologies.  Simultaneously adsorbing two metals as a mixed monolayer of precursors leads to more homogeneous bimetallic nanoparticles, while sequential adsorption leads to core-shell morphologies.  These bottom-up syntheses can be employed with common metal precursors such as noble and base metal ammines or chlorides over high surface area carbon and oxide supports.
