A series of salen and bis(iminoquinoline) ligands with the (1R,2R)-cyclobutyl backbone are synthesized and characterized and nickel(II) complexes are prepared. Salen ligand have extended aromatic sidearms or acid-functionalized sidearms to give mono- and dinuclear complexes, respectively. The dinuclear complexes are examined as asymmetric catalysts for  Mannich-type reactions. The helical bis(iminoquinoline) complexes are examined as catalysts for asymmetric Diels-Alder reactions.
