Vanadyl salen and titanium(IV) salan complexes with phenanthryl and benz[a]anthryl sidearms are synthesized and characterized. The structures of two of the vanadyl salen complexes is reported, and they each show a 1:1 mixture of M:P helical diastereomers in the solid state. The complexes are examined as catalysts for the asymmetric sulfoxidation of thioanisole under a variety of conditions. The terminal oxidants cumene hydroperoxide and hydrogen peroxide give good selectivity for the sulfoxide product, but only low to modest enantioselectivity.
