Phthalocyanines have been used as dye and pigment, as well as functional materials and molecular-scale devices; however, the lack of studies on substituted phthalocyanines often limits their utilities in these fields. We have designed and prepared a series of new phthalocyanine compounds with special structures and properties. 1, 8(11), 15(18), 22(25)-Tetrakis(2-methoxythiophenyl)phthalocyanine and 2, 9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tetrakis(2-methoxythiophenyl)phthalocyanine, and their complexes with nickel, copper and zinc were synthesized from (2-thiophenylmethoxyl)phthalonitrile. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra of these new phthalocyanines were measured. It showed that the introduction of methoxythiophenyl groups into phthalocyanines leads to the reduction of Stockes shift; the fluorescence intensities of phthalocyanines with unmagnetic or closed shell electronic structres (such as zinc) are stronger than those with magnetic or opened shell electronic structures (nickel or copper).
