Bistricyclic aromatic enes (BAEs) are fascinating nonplanar doubly-bridged overcrowded tetraarylethenes, displaying thermochromism, photochromism and a rich stereochemistry. The following variations of BAEs have been adopted: (i) removing one of the bridges (X or Y) to give mono-bridged tetraarylethenes (BAEs-1). (ii) introducing naphthyl in place of phenyl substituents. The syntheses, dynamic stereochemistry and overcrowding of 9-(dinaphthylmethylene)-tricyclic aromatic enes BAE-1 1  and BAE-1 2  (X=-, O, S, Se, Te) will be described.  The effects of 1-naphthyl versus 2-naphthyl substituents will be compared.
