Aurones are natural flavonoid derivatives that have shown interesting biological and optical properties. These molecules have future potential in pharmaceuticals, biological fluorescence, and in solar energy applications. Here we describe a particularly mild method of synthesizing aurones by condensing aromatic aldehydes with coumaranone using a urea/choline chloride deep eutectic solvent. This deep eutectic solvent is inexpensive and non-toxic and provides a green alternative to ionic liquid solvents. Aurones are created easily from various aromatic aldehydes and coumaranone and this new method presents a fast and simple mechanism for making a range of aurones for future study of their biological, medicinal, and optical properties.
