The synthesis of a [6,6] carbon nanotube end-cap has been pursued. From commercially available starting materials and reagents, dibenzo[a,g]corannulene was prepared in good overall yield through a base-catalyzed double aldol condensation, a Diels-Alder/decarbonylation/retro Diels-Alder reaction, and a double, intramolecular, palladium-catalyzed arylation. Dimerization of the dibenzocorannulene gives a 56-carbon precursor to a 60-carbon nanotube end-cap. Further reactions of the dimer will be presented.
