Urazoles have considerable potential as scaffolds for library design, but methods leading to their preparation are severely limited.  We have recently reported an improved method for synthesis of urazoles (i.e. 1,2,4-triazolidine-3,5-diones) which involved the reaction of hydrazine with diphenyl imidodicarbonates.  This method is limited, however, by the necessity to synthesize a new imidodicarbonate for each N4 substituent.  We now report a complementary method which introduces the N4 substituent in the final step.
