Incorporation of pyrimidine moiety to the backbone of conjugated polymers has several advantages. Since it is an electron withdrawing unit incorporation of this unit to polymer backbone leads to polymers with low lying LUMO levels. Also the nitrogen atoms in the polymer backbone will allow the polymer to coordinate with transition metals. Methyl protons in 2-decyloxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine are acidic enough to be removed by using a base, because the resulting carbanion is stabilized by delocalization of the negative charge on both nitrogen atoms in the ring. A series of conjugated polymers were thus synthesized through an aldol condensation reactions between 2-decyloxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine and various aromatic dialdehydes.These polymers show fluorescence, therefore they can be used in organic light emitting diodes.
