Bulk silicon is the bedrock of information technology. We have prepared the fundamental one-dimensional component of bulk silicon, a single chain of Si atoms, and have studied its single molecule conductance using a STM break junction based technique. The design and synthesis of organosilicon nanowires in which conductance is tuned by organic substituents is also described.
