The columnar phases formed by discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) are unique functional nanostructures with remarkable electronic and optoelectronic properties. Moreover the supramolecular columnar phases of DLCs not only serve as models for the study of energy and charge migration in self-organized molecular systems but also act as active functional layers in optoelectronic device applications rendering them as a new generation of organic semiconductors. The functional capabilities of these materials are due to their ease of processibility, spontaneous alignment between electrodes and self-healing of defects owing to their dynamic nature. Among the DLCs, porphyrin derivatives exhibit very promising attributes such as photovoltaic properties for energy harvesting from sunlight.
