In recent years a new frequency window has been opened: The THz range. We could show that THz absorption spectroscopy serves as a new tool to study solvation of biomolecules and have unraveled the underlying motions. Ion hydration is a fundamental question in chemistry with many implications for biology �ranging from ion transport in membrane channels to ion transports in electrolytes. The discussion about the solvation mechanism of different salts has been initiated over a century ago by introduction of the Hofmeister series
