Photoactive compounds for caged nitric oxide release present an opportunity for selective release of nitric oxide. Photochemical release of nitric oxide provides a way to control the delivery of nitric oxide by controlling the location, timing, and intensity of light irradiation. The metal complex CrONO is a promising photochemical nitric oxide releasing molecule (photo-NORM) that has been shown to release enough nitric oxide to activate specific biological pathways and lead to vasorelaxation in porcine arteries during low-intensity visible light irradiation. Methods for delivery of CrONO to biological environments will be discussed including the use of nanoparticles and liposome constructs. The use of nanoparticles helps generate more nitric oxide due to photosensitization and by using liposome encapsulation steady, controlled release of nitric oxide can be achieved during irradiation in oxygenated environments. The use of the nanoparticles and liposomes also provides a means for targeted delivery of photo-NORMs and allows for the development of hybrid nanomaterials that are multi-functional, where tracking of the nanomaterials can occur simultaneously with therapeutic nitric oxide release.
