In the early 1990s all the major pharmaceutical regulatory agencies created policy directives which required the drug developers to understand and document the effects of the chirality in stereoisomeric drugs. This resulted in considerable change for both medicinal and analytical chemists in the pharmaceutical industry. Fortunately, during this time substantial advances in stereoselective synthesis, chiral separations and absolute configuration determination were also being developed and these provided the tools necessary to meet these challenges. In order to best integrate these tools into compound discovery and development we have recently created a cross-functional group of subject�matter experts in order to provide an authoritative and unambiguous assignment of absolute configuration (AC) through a single resource center. The disciplines represented within this group include: chiral separation science, NMR analysis, VCD analysis, single�crystal X-ray diffraction, crystallization (protein complexation as well as  small-molecule), and chemical synthesis and derivatization.
