Since the development of electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI), many throughout the world have tried to extend the working range of mass spectrometry beyond m/z = 20,000 without success. We present evidence from a prototype digitally-driven Q-TOF mass analyzer that high resolution and mass accuracy can be achieved over the entire range of intact singly-charged proteins. Our prototype has increased the resolution and mass accuracy by more than a factor of 100.
