Allium sativum (garlic) has long been recognized for its medicinal value in the context of dietary consumption. Benefits attributed to the consumption of garlic include treatment or prevention of cardiovascular disease states, cancer, and diabetes. Despite the long-standing utilization of garlic as a medicinal agent, the underlying chemical mechanisms by which garlic achieves its chemoprotective effects are poorly understood. Recent works have implicated hydrogen sulfide (H2S) generation and allyl transfer reactions � both arising from organic polysulfides � as possible 'players' in the bioactivity of garlic. Here, we present the first direct, chemical evidence for allyl transfer reactions from garlic-derived organic polysulfides to structurally-diverse, biologically-relevant nucleophiles.
