The Natural Products Discovery Institute (NPDI) was established in June 2011 as the result of an unprecedented gift by Merck and Company of its entire U.S. Natural Products Library and the Schering-Plough Legacy Culture Collection to the Institute for Hepatitis and Virus Research (IHVR). The NPDI and IHVR are located in the Pennsylvania  Biotechnology Center, which houses multiple non-profit institutes and start-up companies working in life sciences.  The IHVR matched the donation with business professionals and the technical know-how of an industrially trained scientific team to construct the NPDI. It will make available this collection of natural products to qualified researchers at both academic and industrial screening centers. This network of research clusters will generate new leads, which will be followed up through grant and private funding to support expanded research and development activities.  In this manner the NPDI will become a self-sustaining engine for natural product development.
