This talk will focus on experiences and lessons learned building and operating small molecule pharmaceutical R&D companies, where the worlds of exciting science (innovation, addressing unmet medical needs) and great business (high return on investment, de-risking, capital efficiency) must quickly merge.  This includes: (1) strategies for targeting specific therapeutic needs that can attract public and/or private financing; (2) R&D strategies and tactics to drive value creation; and (3) approaches to value-capture/exit.  Experiences will be presented from the story of Protez Pharmaceuticals, an antibacterial start-up that centered on novel therapeutics for resistant hospital infections, including its ultimate acquisition by Novartis for $400 million, and on VenatoRx Pharmaceuticals, a recent descendant of Protez.
