There has been a rapid proliferation of new �designer� type drugs that have appeared on the drug �grey market� in recent years. The new chemicals contain an endless variety of minor structural substitutions that may yield similar responses in standard drug analysis. These include multiple isomeric forms, homologous series substitutions, and simple alkyl side-chain replacements.  The testing laboratories are faced with an additional burden of developing the means to identify these new chemicals. Financially strapped laboratories are now being challenged to expand the scope of their testing to include the numerous and ever-changing materials being synthesized and distributed on the grey market. In this session, we will examine the laboratory challenges in identifying and classifying novel compounds for legal applications.
