The synthesis and characterization of a number of homogeneous carbon dioxide reduction catalysts based upon the known M(bipy)(CO)3X (M = Re, Mn; X = Cl, Br) systems are reported. Carbonyl substitution is used to introduce central metal electron density control via the use of s-donor ligands. The method of ligand substitution leads to either monomer or dimer species, both of which show modest electrocatalytic activity with carbon dioxide. The effectiveness of such catalysis was probed by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry.
