Human activities have drastically altered the global nitrogen cycle, with impacts ranging from changes in tropospheric and stratospheric ozone to anoxic waters from nitrogen runoff.  This alteration of the nitrogen cycle also impacts climate, since much of the carbon sink is in the terrestrial biosphere, and since atmospheric nitrogen impacts ozone, aerosol, and nitrogen deposition, all of which impact primary productivity in forest environments.  Biogenic volatile organic compounds impact each of those components through their oxidation.  In this talk I will discuss recent progress in understanding the extent to which BVOC chemistry impacts forest productivity, focusing in part of the production of organic nitrates, which are among the components of nitrogen deposition that can be utilized in the plant biochemistry.  I will also discuss what are known/suspected to be important components of organic nitrogen that deposit to forest environments, and comment on the analytical challenges in studying these processes.
