Minimizing adhesion of ice has been the subject of extensive studies for applications such aircraft wings and power transmission wires, while a growing interest concerns coatings for wind turbine blades. Conventionally, peak removal force of an ice cylinder frozen to the subject surface is used as indication of the strength of an adhesion. Theoretical correlations of ice adhesion to the subject surface have been based on the extent of hydrogen bonding as estimated from receding contact angles. This work takes a new approach with a combination of theory, laboratory ice-removal tests, ATR-IR spectroscopy, TM-AFM, and dynamic contact angles applied to new hybrid fluorous polyoxetane coatings. The results provide insight into the impact of self-stratification, which leads to low peak removal forces and removal energies.
