Polymer dielectrics with high energy density and low dielectric loss are of great interest to many modern electronic and electrical power applications.  This talk will discuss the strategies and present the recent advances in my group in developing dielectric polymers and nanocomposites for energy storage devices.  Specifically, making use of the proximity in energy between different phases which stability can be easily tuned by introducing �defects� in the polymers, we converted a normal ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) copolymer into a ferroelectric relaxor with a high dielectric constant (~ 50) and PVDF into a dielectric with reversible phase transformation between the polar- and non-polar phases, resulting in a high electric energy density (~ 30 J/cc) with fast discharge time (1 GV/m), high energy density (> 20 J/cm3) and very low loss at the highest field measured (much lower than that of biaxially oriented polypropylene). These results demonstrate the promise of polymer dielectrics in realizing ultra-high energy density while maintaining low dielectric losses and a broad operation temperature range.
