The synthesis of natural products that target bacterial cell division, including the tubulin homolog FtsZ, will be discussed. The syntheses of the diterpenoid totarol and the condensed polyketide dimer viriditoxin have enabled detailed studies of the origin of their activity against FtsZ. Progress in the synthesis of related natural products as well as others that are purported to inhibit cell division will be described.
