In this study poly (ethylene terephtalate) (PET)/Maghnite clay (OMMT) composites with three different weight percentages 2, 4 and 6wt% of Maghnite have been prepared by melt-compounding technique. The Maghnite clay, originated from Algeria, was organo-modified with tetraphenyl phosphonium bromide. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed an increase of the interlayer spacing of organoclay in the composites with the amount of the organoclay. DSC results showed that OMMT behaved as a nucleating agent and enhanced the crystallization rate of PET. The thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) revealed a slight increase of the overall thermal stability of PET matrix after composite preparation. The incorporation of OMMT clay did however not affect the reaction order in the nonisothermal degradation process. The activation energies of degradation of the studied materials (PET/OMMT) composites estimated using Ozawa, Flynn and Wall (OFW) and Kissinger's methods, gradually increased with the amount of OMMT, indicating that OMMT had stabilizing effect upon the decomposition of the matrix.
